Safe Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) in Jaipur
Ending a pregnancy is a personal decision, and it should be safe, legal and private. In India, termination of pregnancy is legal under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act when performed by a registered medical practitioner in an approved facility. Care is confidential, and the consent of the woman herself is what the law requires for an adult.
Before the procedure
- An ultrasound confirms that the pregnancy is inside the uterus and how many weeks it is — this decides which method is suitable and rules out an ectopic pregnancy.
- Blood group, haemoglobin and a brief medical history are checked.
- Your options are explained without judgement, and you have time to decide.
Medical method (abortion pills)
- Used in early pregnancy, typically up to nine weeks, under medical supervision.
- Two medicines are taken in sequence; bleeding and cramping similar to a heavy period follow.
- A follow-up visit and scan confirm that the process is complete.
- Abortion pills should never be taken without a doctor's supervision — incomplete abortion, heavy bleeding and a missed ectopic pregnancy are real risks.
Surgical method
- Vacuum aspiration is a short procedure performed under anaesthesia or sedation as day care.
- It is used when the medical method is unsuitable, has not worked, or when preferred.
- Most women return to normal activity within a day or two.
After the procedure
- Bleeding usually settles within one to two weeks.
- Seek care urgently for heavy bleeding (soaking more than two pads an hour), fever, severe pain or a foul-smelling discharge.
- Fertility returns quickly, so contraception is discussed and can be started straight away.
What the law says
- Under the MTP Act as amended in 2021, termination is permitted up to 20 weeks on the opinion of one registered doctor, and up to 24 weeks for specified categories of women on the opinion of two.
- Beyond 24 weeks it is permitted only for substantial foetal abnormalities, on the decision of a medical board.
- The woman's identity is kept confidential by law.
- Sex determination and sex-selective termination are illegal in India, and are not performed.
Early Pregnancy Termination (MTP) — frequently asked questions
Is abortion legal in India?
Yes. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act permits termination by a registered medical practitioner in an approved facility, within the gestational limits and conditions set out in the Act.
Up to how many weeks can abortion pills be used?
Medical termination with pills is generally used in early pregnancy, up to about nine weeks, and only under a doctor's supervision after an ultrasound has confirmed the pregnancy is in the uterus.
Will an abortion affect my ability to have children later?
A safe, properly performed termination does not affect future fertility. Complications that can harm fertility are far more likely after unsupervised or unsafe abortion.
