Gynaecological surgery: frequently asked questions

What does a gynaecological surgeon treat?

Conditions of the uterus, ovaries, tubes, cervix and pelvic floor that need a procedure, such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, adenomyosis, polyps and prolapse. Many women with these conditions can be helped without surgery, and that is discussed first.

What is the difference between laparoscopy and hysteroscopy?

Laparoscopy uses a camera through small cuts on the abdomen to operate outside and around the uterus. Hysteroscopy passes a thin camera through the cervix to see and treat the inside of the uterus, with no cut on the abdomen.

Will I need open surgery?

Many gynaecological operations can be done by keyhole surgery. Open surgery may be safer for very large masses, dense scarring or some emergencies. The approach is decided after your examination and scans.

How long will I be in hospital?

It depends on the operation. Hysteroscopy is often a same-day procedure, and many laparoscopic operations need about one night. Each procedure page gives typical stay and recovery times.

Where is the surgery done?

Surgery is done at Surya Hospital, opposite SMS Hospital in Jaipur, where Dr. Vibha is a Director. Consultations are also held at Udbhav and VS Medihub.
